The Miracles of Marawila Kurusa Palliya

The crucifix at Marawila Kurusa Palliya holds a unique presence—unlike many depictions of Christ gazing down with compassion, this one carries a reputation for divine intervention. In 1947, a mysterious and highly contagious skin disease swept through coastal villages like Marawila, Mudukatuwa, Katuneriya, and Ulhitiyawa, leaving many in agony with no cure in sight.

One desperate mother, heartbroken by her child’s suffering, turned to the Holy Cross in prayer. Moved by faith, she washed the feet of the crucifix with water, then used that same water to bathe her afflicted child and even had the child drink it. Miraculously, the child was healed, marking the beginning of many such testimonies of divine grace associated with this sacred site.

This event solidified the church’s fame as a place where faith meets miracles, drawing pilgrims seeking solace and healing to this day.
