San Thome Cathedral Basilica

The San Thome Cathedral Basilica, located in Mylapore, Chennai, is one of India’s most revered Christian pilgrimage sites. Built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle, who brought Christianity to India in 52 AD, this neo-Gothic marvel is one of only three basilicas in the world constructed over an apostle’s tomb (alongside St. Peter’s in Rome and Santiago de Compostela in Spain).

Historical Significance

  1. The Legacy of St. Thomas
  • St. Thomas, one of Jesus’ twelve apostles, arrived in Kerala in 52 AD.
  • He preached across South India before being martyred in Chennai (72 AD) on St. Thomas Mount.
  • Originally buried in Mylapore, his relics were later enshrined in the basilica.
  1. Evolution of the Basilica
  • 16th Century: Portuguese built a small church over his tomb.
  • 1893: Reconstructed into the current neo-Gothic cathedral by British architects.
  • 1956: Declared a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII.

Architectural Grandeur

  1. Neo-Gothic Splendor
  • White marble spire (143 ft tall) visible from Marina Beach.
  • Stained-glass windows depicting St. Thomas’s life.
  • Catacomb chapel housing the apostle’s original tomb.
  1. Sacred Relics & Artifacts
  • Bone fragment of St. Thomas in a golden reliquary.
  • Wooden statue of “Our Lady of Mylapore” (16th-century Portuguese gift).

Spiritual & Cultural Importance

  1. Major Pilgrimage Destination
  • Feast of St. Thomas (July 3): Lakhs attend mass and processions.
  • Christmas & Easter: Dazzling midnight masses with carols.
  1. Interfaith Harmony
  • Venerated by Christians, Hindus, and Muslims alike.
  • Located near Kapaleeshwarar Temple, symbolizing Chennai’s religious unity.
