Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya: Sri Lanka’s Oldest Buddhist Shrine

Location: Mahiyanganaya, Uva Province (approx. 200km from Colombo)

Sacred Significance:

• First Buddhist Site in Sri Lanka – Believed to have been visited by Lord Buddha during his 1st visit to the island (9 months after attaining enlightenment, around 528 BCE).

• Built by King Devanampiyatissa (3rd century BCE) over a stupa said to contain a Buddha’s hair relic.

• Linked to the Yaksha-Vedda legend – Buddha subdued local spirits (Yakkhas) here, making it a site of spiritual power.
