Madu Ganga: Sri Lanka’s Ramsar Wetland Treasure

The Madu River (also spelled Maadu River) is a scenic river located in Galle District, Southern Sri Lanka, near the town of Balapitiya. It is part of the Madu Ganga (Madu River) wetland complex, which is one of the last remaining mangrove ecosystems in Sri Lanka.

Key Features of Madu River:

  1. Madu Ganga Wetland – A biodiverse estuary with 64 islands, some inhabited, while others are wild with rich flora and fauna.

  2. Mangrove Forests – Home to 14 species of mangroves and many endemic species.

  3. Wildlife – Supports birds, fish, reptiles (like crocodiles and monitor lizards), and aquatic plants.

  4. Cinnamon Peeling – Some islands are used for traditional cinnamon cultivation and processing.

  5. Temples & Attractions – The Kothduwa Temple (on an island) is a Buddhist temple believed to house a sacred relic.

  6. Boat Tours – Popular for river safaris, allowing visitors to explore the islands, mangroves, and local life.

Conservation Status

  • Declared a Ramsar Wetland Site (2006) due to its ecological importance.

  • Part of the Madu Ganga Sanctuary.

Tourism

  • Visitors can take boat rides from Balapitiya to explore the river, islands, and wildlife.

  • Best visited in the dry season (December to April) for calm waters and better wildlife sightings.
