Heaven’s Balcony – The Ultimate Mountain Vista – Shanthipura
The Highest Village of the Country – Sri Lanka’s Rooftop Scenery

Shanthipura is the highest village on the island, situated at an elevation of 7,339 feet along the Kikiliyamana Mountain road near Nuwara Eliya.
Established in 1963 by T. William Fernando, the then-mayor of Nuwara Eliya, the village was part of his initiative to create new settlements. His goal was to encourage the Sinhala community to inhabit the region and reclaim lands that had been largely occupied by tea plantations and Indian Tamil tea laborers. Although most of his efforts were unsuccessful, he managed to found 18 villages, including Shanthipura, leaving a lasting legacy.

Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed by a charming Buddhist pagoda, the village’s centerpiece, perched at the highest point and surrounded by houses scattered across the slopes. Tourists can observe the locals’ unique way of life and their innovative farming techniques adapted to the steep terrain.
