Buduruwagala: Sri Lanka’s Ancient Rock-Carved Buddha Colossus
Hidden deep in the jungles of Wellawaya, the Buduruwagala rock temple features a stunning 7th-9th century group of colossal Buddha and Bodhisattva figures carved into a towering rock face. This little-visited archaeological wonder is Sri Lanka’s tallest ancient Buddha statue.

Key Highlights:
✔ The Central Buddha: Standing 51 feet (15.5m) tall, this is the largest ancient rock-carved Buddha in Sri Lanka – still bearing traces of its original stucco and paint.
✔ The Bodhisattva Trio: Flanking the Buddha are three mystical figures believed to represent Avalokiteshvara (compassion), Vajrapani (power), and Maitreya (future Buddha).
✔ Mysterious Origins: Unlike famous sites like Anuradhapura, no ancient texts mention Buduruwagala – its creators and purpose remain an enigma.

Visitor Experience:
-
Serene jungle setting with resident monkeys and birds
-
No entrance fee (donation-based)
-
Minimal crowds – often you’ll have the site to yourself
-
Local lore: Some believe the central figure’s still-visible orange robe pigment has miraculous properties
Practical Info:
Location: 5km from Wellawaya (Colombo-Batticaloa Road)
Access: Best reached by tuk-tuk or car (last 1km is a scenic jungle path)
Hours: Daylight hours (no strict schedule)
Footwear: Remove shoes before approaching carvings (as at all Buddhist sites)

Nearby Detours:
-
Combine with a visit to Maligawila Buddha (another giant statue)
-
Stop at Rawana Falls on the way from Ella
Why Visit?
For history buffs and offbeat travelers, Buduruwagala offers an atmospheric glimpse into Sri Lanka’s lesser-known ancient art – where jungle vines slowly reclaim these mysterious, weathered masterpieces.
